Airlines:
E-tickets are great for the absent-minded. You are faxed or mailed a ticket confirmation (e-ticket) by the airlines upon payment. You only need to present an ID to check in. I recommend carrying a copy of your e-ticket confirmation/receipt just for reference. (Some international flights do not use e-tickets yet.)
Always check your flight information directly with the airlines 24-48 hours in advance of traveling to avoid problems with flight changes and cancellations.
Call 3 hours prior to departure to check flight times - this could save hours of waiting in the airport for a delayed flight, or even save missing a plane due to early departure (ok, so THIS doesn't happen too often).
If you are disabled, or need additional help (like a just one parent traveling with kids), have a note made when you reserve tickets that you will need assistance at the gates getting on and off the planes. Always recheck at check-in time that all information has been properly conveyed and that the attendants at your arrival gates are aware of the need for assistance.
If you book a flight on-line and get a confirmation Web page and e-mail, are you confirmed on the flight? Maybe not! Remember, a flight is never confirmed until you have a record locator or a ticket/e-ticket confirmation in hand.
