Traveling with 10 and older

Oh, the "tween" years - that awkward stage between childhood whims and teenager wants. Children at this age are torn by their emotions - the wanting to hold on to the childhood innocence and fun they are so used to and the urge to be more grown-up and shed their childish ways. Family vacations need to address this, offering comfort and structure with Mom & Dad right there when needed, and the opportunity for the children to gain independence, personal growth and self-discovery.

Following are some recommendations for vacations with your Tweenage children:

Note: Please keep checking back, since there are so many operators and places to suggest from this age forward, that I will periodically list different suggestions.

All-Inclusive Holidays: (Club Med, Beaches, etc.)

Active Vacations (Biking, Hiking, Skiing, Kayaking, Snorkeling, Space Camp, Flight Camp)

Cruises: (Most cruises lines offer programs for this age)

Foreign Countries: (United Kingdom, Australia, Mexico, Africa)

Ecology Tours: (Galapagos Islands, Rainforests, American Indian visits)

Animal Adventures: (Dinosaurs, Best Friends, Diving with Dolphins, Dude Ranches, Trail Rides)
Dude ranches at this age can be pretty fun. Children (and adults) are "assigned" their own horse when they arrive. The kids can usually help with the care /feeding of their adopted horse. Several ranches also offer children only excursions, such as camping under the stars and special trail rides that give the kids a feeling of independence, without the loss of supervision.
